The Harbour

The Otranto harbour

Otranto harbour is like a small bay where craft of all kinds stop. The Navy League has been there for almost forty years.

In the past, the harbour played a very important role in the Salentino area because of the link with the East. It enjoyed a significant strategic and military position, from the trading viewpoint as well.

Up to 1999, there was a ferry service to Corfù and Igoumenitza in Greece and to the nearby Valona in Albania. Moreover, up to 1994, there were also merchant ships which carried tobacco.

The present trade is concerned with concrete, lime and  plastic tanks. It’s very nice to walk along the pier, especially at sunset.

Otranto is a fishing port, so it happens to see fishing boats coming back after spending one or more days of fishing out to sea.
